A solid debut novel by Gerry Carroll, who happened to be one of Tom Clancy's high school buddies. Carroll went to Vietnam as a Navy search and rescue (SAR) helicopter pilot while Clancy was ineligible for the military due to poor eyesight. Probably a good thing Clancy got to write books instead of serving in the military, but I digress/5.

HC-7 Seadevils was the first Navy squadron dedicated strictly to Combat SAR, commissioned September 1, I got the book because I was a crewman in HC /5(18). Tim Boyle is a search and rescue (SAR) helicopter pilot who retrieves air crews when they crash in North Vietnam.
His best friend is Mike Santy, an attack pilot. There is a plot, of sorts, involving a mission that goes badly wrong, but the meat of the book is the complex, dangerous, expensive, ineffably exhilarating machinery of war, and the Reviews: Search and Rescue (SAR) missions by bomber and helicopter pilots over the Gulf of Tonkin in the Vietnam War are the focus of this realistic novel.
While an introduction by Tom Clancy adds to the credibility of author Gerry Carroll, only a man with knowledge and combat experience could tell such a story with clarity and emotion/5(18).
